Business Planning and Valuation for the Small Business
TOPIC: Business Planning and Valuation for the Small Business
I began my work career as an employee in my family's propane business and became a partner in 1990. While managing the business, I received an MBA in Finance. My Masters Thesis focused on how the capital asset structure of a closely held corporation impacts its fair market valuation. In 1996, while in law school, I negotiated the sale of the family business to National Propane, a publicly traded corporation. As part of the sales process, we implemented several estate planning, charitable planning and tax planning strategies to help minimize both income and estate taxes. Prior to joining the Principal Financial Group®, I had my own law practice, specializing in estate planning and business law. The majority of my clients were business owners looking for advice on daily business operations and strategic estate planning. I joined the Principal Financial Group in October of 2000 as Regional Director of Advanced Markets in the Western United States. In this role I consulted with producers, clients, and their advisors on strategic business and estate planning issues that included executive benefit solutions for corporations, employee benefits for businesses, and estate planning for business owners and high net-worth individuals. In 2004, I decided to develop my own clientele. With my legal, financial, management, and advanced markets experience, my focus was exclusively on business owners, their companies, and their unique needs. I had a successful practice. I made MDRT four out of the five years. During this time, I realized that my passion is consulting and supporting advanced sales concepts. In 2010, I rejoined Principal Financial Group as a National Advanced Solutions Specialist. In this role, I have the opportunity to work directly with producers and advisors exclusively on advanced sales concepts. Because this is such a dynamic industry, I am asked regularly to provide continuing education for attorneys, accountants and benefit providers discussing regulatory updates and the unique plan designs available to business owners.
